Are you dreaming of exploring, slowing down or just reconnecting with your family? Skala Adventures and their guides are excited to offer a family nature skills day!

Join us for a fun time of exploration and basic survival skills! Whether your little explorers are ready to learn some tips how to make a match-less fire or a shelter while learning a few handy knots, we are excited to do that in the most fun and safe manner. We look forward to spending time with you to learning, exploring or just getting away for some outdoor family fun!

WHAT EXACTLY WILL WE BE DOING?

The following activities are options for families to choose from:

  • Short Hike
  • Fun around Fire – matchless fire building / creating your own natural fire starter kit/ cooking over fire
  • Shelters Building/Knots
  • Fun Nature Games

WHO

  • children min. 6 yrs. of age with at least 1 adult participant
  • the more the merrier – more fun for playing games! 😉
  • up to 8 children/2 adults

WHAT’S INCLUDED

PARTICIPANTS MUST PROVIDE

  • transportation to the trailhead – due to the Alberta Health and Safety restrictions, we encourage carpooling only within your cohort group
  • If we are meeting in Kananaskis Country, the Kananaskis Country Vehicle Park Pass is required (effective as of June 1, 2021) / your choice of a yearly pass ($90), or a daily pass ($15/day).
  • personal gear – please let us know what you need and we’ll do our best to arrange a gear rental for you

WHAT TO PACK

  • waterproof jacket/pants
  • hiking pants and top layer (preferably synthetic/merino wool)
  • fleece or insulated layer
  • hat, gloves, extra socks
  • sunhat/sunglasses
  • hiking/comfortable shoes
  • day pack 25-35 L
  • water bottle 1-2 L
  • personal medication/snax
  • smiles! ?

Family Adventures

FAMILY INTRO TO BACKPACKING

Always wanted to get away and still feel like you don’t know where to start, what to pack, where to go?
Or, you are an outdoorsy parent, you know what to do, but you might feel like you could use an extra support, an eye to watch your little ones?
We hear ya! Our passion is to start ’em young! Get packing, we’ll support your sprit of adventure and even play fun nature games, while you get your rest!

ITINERARY

Day 1: meeting at 9 AM at Rafter Six Ranch.

discussing our equipment in order to see if we have all necessary gear for our adventure; learn how to pack your backpack for the next few days, getting rid of unnecessary stuff and keeping the layers to keep warm and dry; camping at the ranch. Bonding time.

Rafter Six Ranch – Elbow Lake Campground

  • today we carpool to our trailhead for over 1hour, and we can start enjoying the Kananaskis Country from the car, until the start of our trailhead – Elbow Pass Day Use Area. We begin hiking to our destination – Elbow Lake backcountry campsite. Today we cover and refresh the basics of safe and fun backcountry travel (including animal safety), map reading, set-up our first camp by the popular Elbow Lake.
  • exploration and reflection activity keep us active today, delicious meal awaits in the evening.
  • this campsite is one of a few providing firewood and fire pits in Alberta Parks, so we are lucky to have a nice evening time by the fire!

Day 2 – Elbow Lake area exploration

  • after hearty breakfast, we head over with light day packs and explore the surrounding valley out of tree line, with scenic views opening up high and wide
  • lots of learning, reflection and exploring today!

Day 3 – Elbow Lake Campsite – Elbow Pass Day Use Area Trailhead

  • today we return to civilization, even though we probably won’t feel like leaving this area just yet. We hike from our campground soaking in the last few hours of the K-country.
  • This trail is 1.3km one way with 125 meters of elevation gain and is rated easy.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • backcountry camping permit, camping at a local ranch
  • group gear: tents, cooking gear, filtration system, group first aid kit, bear spray, water treatment
  • variety of hearty and delicious meals, group dinner on day 1 – lunch on day 3
  • pre-trip support to help you be prepared for your wilderness journey
  • backcountry travel ethics and wilderness safety education
  • reflection time of contemplative/personal development activities supporting your experience / group debrief sessions
  • accommodation: ranch camping – day 0, backcountry camping days 1-3
